Woman Vs Food and Weigh In Wedneday…the results are in!

First things first, it’s Weigh In Wednesday.  Another 400g gone this week, that 70kg mark is getting closer and closer. Cue the dance of joy!

I was watching TV this morning, cruising around the Foxtel channels when I hit TLC.  Showing on TLC was a show called “Man Vs Food” which I have watched a couple of times before with my nephew.  I decided to drop in for the episode and see what Adam Richman was devouring today.  For the uninitiated,  Man Vs Food is a show where a former chef travels the country searching for the most unbelievable culinary challenges.  Huge burgers, pizzas, burritos and today a 6lb (3 kilo!) frittata all being gorged by the one person to the cheers of an adoring crowd.  It really is “car crash” TV, you know you shouldn’t watch but you can’t look away.  As I watched him shovelling enough food in his mouth to feed a table of 10 people, I wondered what is happening to society’s concept of normal food consumption.  Fast food portions keep on get bigger and you keep seeing more and more commercials for upgrades to combo boxes that you don’t need, like the movie popcorn buckets would feed a whole family but are marketed with a large popcorn, lollies or an ice cream and just one large drink to encourage each movie goer to buy their own huge combo. And then shows like this, which whilst obviously on the extreme end of the scale, still get the idea into viewer’s heads that people are able to eat this much food.  With morbid obesity rates on the rise, literally people dying from overeating, why is this mindset still being encouraged?

On the flip side, last week I saw a show called “Half Ton Hospital” which focuses on the patients of Brookhaven Hospital in New York, a nursing home for the morbidly obese.  These people live at the nursing home in order to try and get their eating habits and in turn their weight back under control.  Unfortunately, despite the calorie controlled diet and exercise regime, many still fail in their quest for health.  Even under these controlled conditions, some insist on cheating and ordering fast food into the hospital and some of these people pay for it with their lives. As the obesity epidemic continues to gather momentum, I wonder if facilities such as Brookhaven are the wave of the future.  When 26 year olds are dying from this disease, the question must be asked, where will it end?

Whilst I was never at these extremes, either with my portions or my weight, programs such as these have made me very grateful that I discovered my path before everything got this far out of control.  For me, my Everest is a 20 kilos weight gain, and that has been hard enough to overcome (and I am still only half way along the journey).  I can’t imagine the struggle it must be when you are starting at nearly 600 pounds (272 kgs) and trying to get your life back.  It must seem insurmountable and my hearts breaks for them.  Anyway, I have found my path to success, I’ve put on my ruby slippers (well, blue Nikes anyway) and I am going to continue down the yellow brick road until I reach the final destination.  See you there!
