Flicking the switch…

It’s funny how quickly your mindset can change.  To preface this post I must say that I am a shopaholic and a gadget geek.  The first sign that I am really getting into something is usually that I start shopping to facilitate the activity.  For example, when I fell in love with Zumba classes, I promptly found the Zumba website and within weeks I had about 5 Zumba outfits (24 hour shipping – irresistable!) as well as the Wii Zumba game.  When I decided that I wanted to swim laps, I researched and found a lap and calorie counting watch so that I could count my calories burnt in the pool.  I also bought a waterproof MP3 player so that I could have tunes while I swim, works a treat.

It was during a walking phase that I decided that I hated those stupid little pedometers that you clip onto your pants, they are inaccurate and really don’t give you a real picture of your progress.  I found, and fell in love with, the Nike Sportsband (which also meant buying several pairs of Nike+ ready shoes) which not only counted the distance that I walk, but the speed, the calories burnt and the duration of the walk.  I am also able to track my progress and set goals for myself by uploading the data from each session to the Nike website. I love it.

Up until recently, I was only concerned with the distance that I walked each day. I would put on the Sportsband and off I would go, checking only how far I walked.  The calories I burnt were a secondary concern.  I walked as far as I walked and how ever many calories that added up to was fine with me.  The only time I ever got excited about the calories was after a huge long walk such as the 7 Bridges when I burnt over 2000 calories.  Then on the website one day I set myself a new goal, a goal of burning 9000 calories in 6 weeks.  At first I followed the status quo, watching the distance and checking the calories later.  Then as the goal’s end date started to approach, I realised that I had to monitor the calories and I had to increase how many I was burning each session.  I made my goal and suddenly I found that my focus had shifted and I wanted to compete with myself in each session.  I now instead of saying I will walk 5km and be done won’t finish my walk until I have burnt at least 500 calories and several times I have found myself saying “ok, you’ve only got 50 more calories until you’re up to 600 calories, let’s do it.” On Sunday, I burnt over 800 calories on my walk and would have done more except that it was getting late and I didn’t want to risk being on a bush trail in the dark.  I feel like I have suddenly caught on to the calories in, calories out message (it took long enough). I have now set myself another distance goal – 80 kilometres in 2 weeks, with my new calorie counting regime, I should knock it over before the weekend. When the walk can’t finish until you burn 800 calories, the distance just keeps adding up. I may need new shoes sometime soon.

And by the way, it helps that my new MP3 sunglasses (thank you ebay!) keep me entertained all the way…….
