Bend and Stretch, Reach For The Stars

So I am probably showing my age with that title, but for those of you not in Oz or not old enough to remember, this was a song they sang every day on the classic kiddies show called “Romper Room”.

This week, I am doing a yoga intensive course which is fabulous.  I have done many of these in years gone by, but it was one of the things that went by the wayside when I was doing my masters degree and also coincided with my weight gain.  I have wanted to get back and do one for ages now, but the timing never fitted into my schedule or else, it happened to be when I couldn’t afford the extra dollars for the course.  This one however falls in the school holidays, which works for me with work perfectly and I happened to have the money available, so it was all systems go.

The intensive course consists of yoga classes each morning this week at 6:15am, two 6:00pm evening classes and a Saturday lunch time class.  Each class includes massage at the end and a meditation.  We are also given a macrobiotic meal after each class, so that not only is the flexibility and function of our bodies catered for in the class itself, but our nutrition is catered for as well.  There is also an optional beach run and dip in the ocean available before the class, but as I live 30 minutes drive from the class, it makes it too early for me to get there – I would have to be up at about 4:15am to get ready and drive there in time to be at the studio by 5:15am to do the run, so I am doing this part of things myself later in the day.

So far I have attended two classes and I am already feeling the benefits.  I feel lighter and more flexible.  My body is remembering what it used to do in these classes.  I at one stage did 4 yoga classes a week, two early morning classes and two classes on the weekend, but now I just do the one class a week.  I must say I have missed the feeling that I used to get from doing all the classes. each class had a different focus – the early morning classes were geared for surfers, so focused on developing flexibility for movement in the surf and developing strength in the core and upper body for paddling (I am not a surfer, but I do swim and body surf in the summer, so the skills were easily translatable).  My Saturday class tends to have a different focus each week, depending on the needs of the students (various aches and pains, injuries) and seasonal elements (yoga works on the 5 elements theory, that the body functions differently and consequently has different needs at different times of the year).

The Sunday morning class was about developing strength especially in the core.  I think that I might have to try and at least get back into one of the morning classes after this intensive has finished, I just have to work out the logistics with combining morning yoga classes with casual teaching work.  I have to be able to be available to take calls, but I can’t leave the phone on during yoga, so it can be tricky as I really can’t afford to miss a day’s work. I really do miss it and it does me so much good, so I will have to try and make it work somehow.

Coincidentally, our weekly challenge for 12WBT is all about stretching and increasing our flexibility, so I figure that I’m all over this one.

As I mentioned in my last post, I have let my running training slip over the past few weeks, so I have started from scratch with Couch to 5K.  I am pleased to say that even with the lack of running I have done recently, I am still faster in Week 1 this time around than I was on my last attempt.  I completed Week 1 yesterday, and was stoked to see that I increased my distance by 110 metres from my previous day’s run yesterday.  On to Week 2 I go!

So the program for the rest of today is a run later today and then yoga classes tomorrow morning and evening.  Here’s to a stronger, leaner more flexible me 🙂

P.S. The universe does indeed reward you for being true to your word.  Yesterday afternoon I decided to go for my run.  It was 28 degrees Celsius in Sydney yesterday, so it was hard going and I really had to push myself to finish the run.  But I did it! On my way home, on a whim, I decided to stop at Newport Beach and look at the water. No sooner did I look out to sea than I saw a water spout.  A pod of whales had come into the bay, and for the next 20 minutes I was treated to the sight of them splashing a playing and blowing water into the air.  What a reward for my efforts!
