Transformers…More Than Meets The Eye

Transformers…More Than Meets The Eye

So, I was watching Foxtel late the other night and one of the entertainment news programs came on.  I don’t usually bother with them, as I really don’t care what the Kardashians are doing this week or what actress was snapped without makeup or with cellulite.  But this caught my attention.  A fashion photographer and his wife decided to show how easily the fashion industry is able to manipulate the images of models into their ideal of “perfect” fantasy women.  The problem with this is that the consumer does not know that this manipulation has occurred and we are led to believe that what we see in advertising and magazines is what perfection looks like.

I don’t mean to say that we are naive about the airbrushing of models, we all know that blemishes are removed, skin tones can be changed and noses adjusted.  But the film in the link (click on the “Transformers” line below the title to watch) above shows how a 5’3″ woman can be changed into a 5’9″ with a few clicks of the mouse.  Her legs and arms are stretched, her breasts lifted, stomach and bum trimmed, even her neck and chin are adjusted.  You can see her being transformed before your eyes.  It is disturbing to see how easily this lie of the fantasy is perpetrated.  What is even more disturbing is what it does to women who are presented with these images daily as the ideal, and yet are impossible to achieve in reality.  We all have things about ourselves that we would like to change and for those who have severe body issues, these impossible standards can do real damage as they strive to achieve something that cannot exist in reality. It is being set up for failure with every magazine cover.

That is why our goals need to be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realist and Time Based). We need to understand that we are never going to transform into 6 foot cat walk amazons, in fact, most of those women don’t really exist anyway.  (This is a relief as I write this on a Sunday morning, on the sofa, still wearing PJs with messy hair and no makeup: I really don’t need that pressure on the weekend.) We can be the best version of ourselves – healthy, strong, fit and beautiful in our own way. We can rise up to meet our own challenges and reach new goals on our terms. So go out there and be strong, healthy, wonderful you – and be happy 🙂

Who needs to be six foot tall anyway, unless you need to reach the top shelf?
