Goodbye 2013

Happy New Year to you all!  I hope you have had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends.  I had a really nice Christmas, and despite the best of intentions, it seemed to take on a life of it’s own and continue all the way into New Years.

I really thought I had a handle on this.  Last year I managed it really well and stuck to my guns, exercise most days and Christmas food on Christmas Day and Boxing Day only ( we had a second celebration with the relatives the day after Christmas as they live about an hour and a half away and we didn’t see them Christmas Day). This year was a different story however.

I started out really well this year.  Because my work has been casual this year, I didn’t have the additional minefield of the work Christmas parties to attend because when you work at different schools all the time, you don’t get invited to any of the Christmas parties.  This really did work out well for me because I really don’t have the extra cash to throw around and it certainly saved me the extra food and drink to work off later.  On Christmas Day I put on my Santa Fun Run outfit and took myself off for a 5km walk in the rain before Christmas lunch.

And then…..nothing.

Yes, I have different things on with family and I had a friend come and stay for two days which made it harder than normal, but really there is no excuse.  I did have a lovely stroll with my friend while she was here, but it really was just a stroll.  She was wearing sandals and a maxi dress, so we really couldn’t cover any really distance or push the pace, the shoes and dress were just not the right outfit for serious exercise.  It was better than no exercise at all, but I am guessing that it didn’t put a dent in the calories I have consumed.

So, with the ushering in of a new year, I stopped the rot today with a 10km walk – start the year as I mean to carry on.  And back on the healthy food bandwagon as well, not so much a New Year’s Resolution as shaking my head and watching the fog dissipate to see the clear path ahead.

After uploading my walk from today to Nike +, I looked at my stats for 2013.

2013 Nike

I burnt 75 374 calories, which the the equivalent of 56 large Big Mac meals

(considering that to burn this I walked for 158 hours and 40 minutes, I think this is one of the best illustrations of the cost to your body regular junk food consumption).  I walked/ran 1045 km, which would almost get me from home to Noosa, Queensland to put it in perspective distance wise.

So for 2014? No resolutions for me but more of the same and better for this year.  I want to be more consistent around my exercise and lose the self-negotiation that I am so good at. I want to do good things for myself and look after my health more responsibly.  I have been on this track for a good length of time now and I need to make sure that I continue on this way and continue to move onto that big picture that I have in mind. I am already signed up for the next 12WBT round, so that will help me move along with consistency and support.

Anyway, best wishes to all of you for a happy and productive 2014 🙂

  1. Love the subtitle of your blog and the phrase “self-negotiation.” I do a little of that as well. My best in the New Year.
