Little Things Mean A Lot

I was having lunch with a friend and her husband the other day and we were generally catching up on the news.  Her husband told me a story and it really affected me so I thought that I would share it here.

They sail and he competes in races.  He entered a regatta, which my friend could not attend due to other things going on at the time, so he and some of his friends attended the regatta and planned a party for after the event.  He won his race, so the party became a real celebration.  There was my friend’s husband and two couples and they all had their own boats.  As the party on board progressed, one of the wives became very drunk.  Both she and her husband are quite heavy drinkers, so this was not an unusual occurrence.  When she started stumbling, everybody felt it was the best plan to help her into her boat and let her sleep it off rather than risking an injury falling down on the boat.  So they took her across to her boat and put her to bed.  Several hours later, her husband also stumbled into his bed beside her.

My friend’s husband and the other couple woke up early and decided to check on them as they were both so drunk when they went to bed.  When they looked inside the tiny boat, they could see the husband asleep below deck, but no sign of the wife.  They searched both of the other boats, but she was nowhere to be found.  They decided to wake up her husband and ask him if he knew where she was.  He had no idea and at this point, they realised that they had to call in the water police to help with the search.  They went into the wharf where the water police were waiting for them.  The water police informed them that there was no need for a search as fishermen had found her body floating an hour before. They believe that she must have got up to go to the bathroom during the early hours of the morning, overbalanced and fallen overboard.

Apart from the tragedy of a 47 year old woman dying way too soon and two young children losing their mother, I believe that this story resonated with me for a reason.  It illustrated to me that one choice that may seem insignificant at the time can have major consequences.  She could never have known that the drink that put her over the edge would lead to the end of her life.  It isn’t always something so dramatic, but every decision has ramifications, good or bad. Think Gwyneth Paltrow in “Sliding Doors”…..

Opting out of a workout, eating a sneaky treat, that extra glass of champagne at a party may not seem that big at the time but what will follow? It may not seem that big a deal to decide not to exercise today, but what happens when there is a work or family situation tomorrow, or you have a headache.  That one missed workout can make it easier to balloon out to 2 or 3 missed workout.  That extra treat today may reflect in your result on the scale for the week.  The hangover after that extra glass of bubbly may mean that you can’t exercise tomorrow or will eat greasy crap to compensate.  The consequence doesn’t have to be as big as the tragic consequences of the story above, but there is always a consequence nevertheless.  Every action has an equal and opposite reaction…..I can guarantee that if she knew what was to come, she would not have had that last drink or two…..
