Byron Bay And Broken Cars

Well here I am in Byron Bay. I come up here every January for the last week of the summer school holidays, a week to breathe and reboot before starting back to work.  This year is shaping up to be a slightly different Byron Bay experience.

I arrived on Saturday in my faithful little Hyundai, Rosie.  Things started well, dinner at the Great Northern Hotel on Saturday night and a stroll though the craft markets, followed by a quick top-up at the supermarket.  Sunday was a walk in the morning followed by lunch and my first trip to Wategos Beach…and that was where everything went a little pear shaped.

I had a fantastic time at the beach, a swim, sunbaking and reading my book.  Then I got back in the car to drive home and the gears felt a little stiff.  I turned a corner and suddenly there were no gears at all.  I had nothing but a $20 note and my keys with me as I had seen no need to take my phone to the beach.  So I locked up the car and trudged back into town to find a taxi home and work out what to do next.

Yesterday started with a walk into town (almost 4km) to meet up with a tow truck and get my car to a mechanic.  This was followed by another 4km walk from the mechanic to my accommodation with the promise of a phone call when they worked out why poor Rosie is so sick.  Now I wait.

There is a positive side to this however.  I may not be able to travel to the Crystal Castle or Nimbin as usual, but there are still things I can do.  By the very fact that the car is out of commission, I have to walk everywhere.  I always intended that this would be an active holiday, but now there will be no excuse for this not to happen.  And the payoff after that 4km walk into town is time spent on the beach, one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever experienced.  Not too shabby 🙂

It does appear that getting the car fixed by my Saturday deadline may be an issue.  But my landlady is letting me stay in her art studio until next Wednesday as a trade off for getting my cottage ready for the next guests on Saturday.  She is going away on Saturday herself and it was going to be issue for her to have the cottage ready for the next guests as I move out Saturday.  So it is win/win – she does not have to pay a cleaner and I get a few days free accommodation and spend a few more days in Byron…a tough gig but someone has to do it.

So, I will bid you adieu.  I have to get moving…the beach awaits 🙂
