My Progress So Far

So Week 3 for 12WBT is almost finished, and, in the interests of full disclosure, I thought that it was time to update you on my progress so far.  I have lost anther 200 grams this week, I would like it to be more but slow and steady wins.

As far as exercise goes, I did the 12WBT gym machine workout on Tuesday (which quite frankly kicked my ass!), a walk and I braved my second Body Attack class on Wednesday, and another walk yesterday afternoon.  I am planning a gym session and a walk for a little later in the day, yoga tomorrow and a long walk on Sunday.

About a month ago, my cat Yoda decided that my Nike Fuelband looked like something that she might like to chew.  Here is a pic of the little angel – looks like butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth, right?

She chewed through the silicone on the band and managed to wreck all the electronic bits inside.  At $149 plus shipping from the States, that become one expensive chew toy and left me without a way of tracking my calories for exercise.  My Nike + Sportsband is great for walking and running, but it works in a similar way to a pedometer and so for things like rowing machines, spin bikes, Zumba etc where you don’t travel a great distance, it is not very accurate.  So, not being very cashed up at the moment, I decided to check out my options.  I checked out the 12WBT shop and places like Rebel and JB Hi-fi for fitness gadgets such as Jawbone, Fitbit and various heart rate monitors to see whether I could find something for less than the cost of the Fuelband (which I loved as it hooked up to my Nike account on the website and allowed me to track my progress in one place).  All these options were too expensive, and the one cheaper option, the little Fitbit that hooks on to the bra or waistband didn’t excite me very much – I knew that I would forget to put it on or lose it as it is quite small.  So I resorted to my old friend Ebay to see whether I could find a cheaper alternative.  I got lucky and found a Polar FT4 heart rate monitor for $79.99 and they delivered to me for free in 2 days.  AND IT IS GREEN! I love green 🙂

The reason that I never embraced the idea of heart rate monitors before was that I did not like the idea of the chest strap.  I thought that it would be very irritating whilst exercising.  I have been pleasantly surprised to discover that the strap is very soft and hardly noticeable whilst working out.  And I do like to know what I have achieved when I am exercising, so this is a good way to get that info. My only issue is that I can’t upload the info from the Polar, so I can’t see a pattern of progress.  I have joined Polar Personal Trainer so that I can upload my data, but I have to do it manually which is a bit more laborious rather than with the Fuelband and the Sportsband which I just plug into the computer and the data uploads automatically.  But at least I am back on the air and I can track my progress, even if it is a little more fiddly.

I added another string to my bow this week.  I finally used a cross trainer, which I had always avoided like the plague.  I will never love this machine, but I know that it did give me quite a workout and I am determined to mix things up this round.  I never thought that I would do Body Attack either, but I have done 2 classes now in less than a week. So, I think the ways things will go is that walking and yoga will be my staples, and I will mix it up for the rest of my workouts.  Some will be classes, such as Attack and Zumba – I am planning to go back to Pump and circuit as well, and some will be the 12WBT workouts.  I think that this will give me a good mix and keep things fresh for me.  It is also more practical as the days get shorter – it gets dark about 5.15 and cuts my walk short because I have to think about safety and walking tracks are not safe places to be when you are alone and it is getting dark.  The outdoors will still be there in the spring.

As far as the 12WBT Weekly Challenges go, I yesterday bought a herb garden kit to plant for the Week 2 Challenge (better late than never) and I am 64 push-ups into a 300 push challenge for Week 3.

Anyway, off I go…time to get going to the gym 🙂 Time for some push-ups……

PS. 328 push ups – that’s how many I can do 🙂
